During four weeks, more than 16,000 people agreed to answer a long questionnaire, and for nearly 4,000 of them, to tell in their own words the ways in which they experienced and felt this suspended time.
Presentation
In the spring of 2020, the authorities imposed, in France as in other countries, a confinement of the population to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The episode has upset our habits, our ties to others, our relationship with the authorities too. It affected at the same time, a fact rare enough to be underlined, all the milieus and territories of our society. How have we experienced these new rules of life? How did we cope with the trials they imposed on us? What can we say about the social consequences of this extraordinary event?
This book offers answers based on a survey conducted at the very heart of the event. During four weeks, more than 16,000 people agreed to answer a long questionnaire, and for nearly 4,000 of them, to tell in their own words the ways in which they lived and felt this suspended time. Their living and working conditions, their reactions and their feelings are the meat of this book.
About the survey
The survey carried out during the first confinement, of which this book is one of the products, is the first step of a larger research program. The first wave of survey, by questionnaire, in spring 2020 has since been extended by two more, by interview and questionnaire, in winter 2020-2021 and spring 2021. The program is now funded by the National Research Agency.
The main results of these survey waves are published on a dedicated website. Additional information on the data, the formulation of the variables, the statistical adjustment methods used, the conditions of access to the data, and the questionnaire used in the first wave of the survey are available there.
