How should one proceed when a survey involves the analysis of apparently gender-blind documents in which sex is neither assigned nor self-reported? This article examines approaches to sex categorization based on the study of traces of gender in a Polish population register of the 1930s. The precise and systematic identification and comparison of these traces raises not only the question of how to construct a convention of equivalence, but also highlights the interest of dissonances, hiatuses and marginal cases in sociological and historical analysis.
